Phi Gamma Delta House
The Edmonton Chapter of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity (also known as Phi Gam or Fiji) had been renting a house from the University of Alberta since 1985. In early 2022 the Fraternity made arrangements with the University to purchase a different house - built in 1914 and located just across the street - if they moved it off campus. In late 2022 the house was relocated to a new site a few blocks away.
The exterior character of the original home will remain, while the interior will be renovated and an addition constructed at the rear.
Watch a two minute video of the historic move!
The Garneau neighborhood of Edmonton is home to a number of historic homes, including this one that the Fraternity plans to use as a new home for student members. Scope of work for the project includes concept design options for additions and renovation layouts for the house in it’s new location, full construction documents, and eventual construction and handover stages.
The difficult task of relocating an existing historic building to a nearby infill lot was met with help from all directions. Aside from the huge physical endeavor that such a task requires, there were significant planning and regulatory requirements that challenged moving this older and wider housing stock to a narrow infill site. The City of Edmonton’s willing collaboration, expertise and assistance helped the team constructively navigate problems of infringing setbacks, limiting distance, and means of escape towards practical solutions. Ultimately the client has been able to preserve this small piece of Edmonton history!
